Zandvoort 1980

My first Grand Prix
The pictures below were taken at the Dutch Grand Prix in 1980 which was held at Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The circuit is nestled in the sand dunes right next to the sea.

Sadly, part of the circuit has now been taken over by a holiday park.

Most of the photographs shown were taken at the Northern end of the Panoramabocht. Bottom of the corner as you look at it.

1980 was the era of the 'ground effect'; where cars had 'skirts'. These 'skirts' were panels running down the side of the cars which touched the ground, channelling the air underneath.

This created a low pressure area under the car which sucked the cars onto the track. Although the Brabbhams didn't have a front wing, that didn't stop Nelson Piquet from taking second place in the 1980 F1 championship!

No overtaking?
Although it may be difficult to think of today, many cars had no, or small front wings, shaped underbodies and some had turbos. Most cars had the same Cosworth DFV normally aspirated V12 engines.

Small front wings and ground effect, there was loads of overtaking! ... Back to the future for F1?

Sadly, he was going nowhere fast as he only finished the race in 11th place.
